Maine Lawmakers Delay Retail Cannabis Market, But Governor Won't Sign Off On Bill

State lawmakers on Thursday unanimously approved legislation delaying the retail sale of cannabisuntil at least February 2018.

A referendum approved by voters in November gave state regulators nine months to adopt rules for marijuana legalization. The legislation will extend that deadline.

The legislation also makes clear that individuals younger than 21 years old cant possess or use cannabis. Growing and possessing recreational marijuana, however, would still legal starting Monday.

The bill then went tothe desk of Republican Gov. Paul LePage, but he said he won't sign it until lawmakers ear-mark funds for the rule-making process.
